Launch
In January 2016, Mitsubishi Philippines launched the third-generation Montero Sport, replacing its predecessor in terms of refinement, style, and power. It gets a redesigned fascia that showcases Mitsubishi's 'Dynamic Shield' grille, which is the benchmark of the brand's modern lineup.
On October 4, 2019, the refreshed Montero Sport was launched in the Philippines to give the top-selling SUV an updated look. It now came with a new 'Dynamic Shield' design that would give the popular SUV a more corporate look. The redesign would also relocate elements from its headlamps to the bumper of the vehicle giving it a similar look to its stablemate the Xpander. The facelift would also shorten the long tail lamps found at the rear of the vehicle as well as give it new wheels. Along with the new exterior, Mitsubishi also added new convenience features to further update its diesel 7-seater SUV. Power options and output remained the same for the facelifted model.
The facelifted Montero Sport originally came with just three 4x2 variants that had pricing below the P2-million mark. Mitsubishi would later on in 2020 add the missing top-of-the-line 4x4 variant to complete the popular 7-seater diesel SUV’s lineup in the country.
In 2024, Mitsubishi introduced another facelift to the Montero Sport. This facelift brought exterior changes and a host of tech and safety upgrades. In addition, Mitsubishi has revamped the lineup, introducing the Black Series 4x4 variant to serve as the new range-topping variant of the Montero Sport line.
Platform, Chassis and Powertrain
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport utilizes a ladder-frame chassis and comes available in the Philippines as in either rear-wheel-drive or in four-wheel-drive configurations. It comes powered by the 4N15 engine which is a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline 4 DOHC 16-valve diesel motor that produces 179 hp and 430 Nm of torque. The diesel powerplant also comes with a Variable Geometry Turbo as well as the brand's Mitsubishi Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) technology to help you go the extra mile. The SUV sends power to the wheels via either an 8-speed Aisin automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Montero Sport puts the power to the ground in a very linear fashion. Thanks to its 2.4-liter turbo diesel motor that produces 179 hp and 430 Nm of torque there is always plenty of torque to go around when you need it. The 8-speed automatic transmission and 6-speed manual also do an excellent job of keeping the revs low when cruising and quickly downshifting when more power is needed. This gives the popular 7-seater SUV good fuel-efficiency figures as well as passenger comfort thanks to a smooth acceleration curve. Paddle shifters are also present in the vehicle in case you want to manually shift the gears yourself.
When it comes to tighter spaces, however, the Montero Sport can be a bit of a workout as the steering leans towards the heavier side. However, having slightly heavy steering does aid the vehicle especially when it comes to highway cruises. It also aids in communicating what the wheels, tires, and suspension are doing while you are driving for better handling.
Technology Features
The Montero Sport comes packed with several high-tech features that not only match its modern looks but also match its price tag. The GLX variant comes with a seven-inch infotainment screen while the GLS and Black Series variants come with an eight-inch infotainment system. Both systems come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. As for the instrument cluster, GLX and GLS variants get analog gauges while the Black Series receives a fully-digital instrument cluster. Functions such as Bluetooth connectivity and Aux input are also standard across the line. A Tomtom navigation system is also available with most variants of the Montero Sport.
As far as convenience features go the Montero Sport, comes with a power liftgate and with hands-free function for its Black Series grades along with extra USB charging points for the second row. A wall-style 220V socket is also available for all trim levels with the exception of the GLX variant. Reverse sensors, a reverse camera, and cruise control are standard for the SUV across its local lineup. The GLS AT and both Black Series 2WD and 4WD variants also come with a multi-around monitor.
The Black Series model also comes with Mitsubishi Remote Control functionality in which you can pair your smartphone with the vehicle to control certain functions. The remote control function will let you open or close the tailgate and lock it automatically, turn on or off the headlights, activate the hazard lights of the vehicle, open or close the power windows, switch the engine on or off, set reminders for you in case you forgot to lock the vehicle and help you find the SUV in a parking lot with its Car Finder function.
Exterior
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport carries Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design language that can be seen in the marque’s other cars. This gives the seven-seater SUV a three-tier headlight configuration that can also be seen in the other vehicles in the brand's local lineup. Lighting comes from LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, as well as LED tail lights which have been revised to become shorter from the pre-facelifted model. In 2024, Mitsubishi has slightly restyled the front end of the Montero Sport, introducing changes to the grille and bumpers. These are also partnered with halogen fog lamps for the model lineup.

In 2024, Mitsubishi updated the Montero Sport's interior giving it a new two-tone colored upholstery, a fresh three-spoke steering wheel, and a new eight-inch digital instrument cluster for the Black Series variants.
Space inside the Montero Sport is plentiful as cargo volume is expandable thanks to its configurable seats. When more space is needed for cargo the third row can be folded flat allowing for more space inside the vehicle. The same can also be said for the second row, however, it folds at an angle.
Safety
When it comes to safety the Montero Sport is well equipped. Standard features for the vehicle include dual front airbags for the lower models, ABS with EBD, a Brake Override system, speed-sensing door locks, ISOFIX child seat tethers, and high-impact side beams. Higher variants such as the Black Series and GLS grades come with 4 extra airbags totaling 7, stability and traction control, brake assist, hill start assist, hill descent control, and trailer stability control.
The Black Series 4x2 and 4x4 variants also come with a rear cross-traffic alert system, ultrasonic misacceleration mitigation system, forward collision mitigation system, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-change assist, Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control, and a blind spot monitoring system.
